The Internet's Broken Lock

So  there is a little thing called SSL that pretty much keeps the Internet up and running and safe. And apparently, these two researchers—Duong and Rizzo—plan to prove that they have successfully found a way to crack the code.

Yes, they’ve found a way to unravel the Internet—or at least the thin shroud of protection keeping all of our data safely tucked away.

Don’t panic. It’s not as bad as it sounds.

It all comes down to encryption, and all the different puzzles and systems and codes and gibberish that come together to let our computers communicate with websites safely. That little green padlock and HTTPS:// in your URL bar supposedly means that your connection is secure and you can pass PII back and forth willy-nilly without too much concern.

Now, the researchers are saying that it can be hacked and that they have done it. Fortunately, these guys and those to whom they are presenting their research are in it for the betterment of Internet security. They want to crack it so they can then improve it. But, now that the word is out, you can be sure that nefarious sorts in the hacking community are working on it themselves, and their intentions are not so good.

What does this mean for us? Nothing yet, but it is a good reminder that there is always a risk when it comes to the Internet. Buy, sell, read, share, enjoy—but don’t forget that nothing is completely secure.
